How to Become a Qualified Net Zero Participant

How do I become a Qualified Net Zero Builder?

1) CHBA Membership. Be a CHBA member in good standing. Learn more about the benefits of membership and contact a local HBA to join. (When you join a local HBA, provincial and national membership is included.) CHBA members are required to register all their homes with a warranty provider.

2) Training. Complete the CHBA Net Zero Builder Training with a minimum exam score of 75%. An SO approved* Building Science Training course is a pre-requisite to the CHBA Net Zero Builder Training. Once training has been successfully completed builders can request the Net Zero/Ready Home logos from their Service Organization (SO) for promotion of projects. (Builder companies must have at least one trained person on staff.)

3) EnerGuide. Become an EnerGuide (ERS) registered builder with NRCan before starting the home.

4) Labels. Work with a CHBA Qualified Net Zero Energy Advisor (EA) and Service Organization (SO) to obtain ERS and Net Zero/Ready labels for the home(s).

5) Registration. Once the first home has been labelled, the SO verifies that all Program Requirements have been met and then prompts the builder to register with the CHBA by signing the Builder Agreement and Attestation at www.chba.ca/NZHLPregistration and paying the Builder Registration Fee.

- Once registration is complete, the SO sends the builder a confirmation letter along with the program marketing collateral. The builder will then be added to the www.NetZeroHome.com webpage as a CHBA Qualified Net Zero Builder.

How do I become a Qualified Net Zero Renovator?

1) CHBA Membership. Be a CHBA member in good standing. Learn more about the benefits of membership and contact a local HBA to join. (When you join a local HBA, provincial and national membership is included.) CHBA members are required to register all their homes with a warranty provider.

2) RenoMark. Be a RenoMark Renovator.

3) Training. Complete the CHBA Net Zero Builder Training and the CHBA Net Zero Renovator Training with a minimum exam score of 75%. An SO approved* Building Science Training course is a pre-requisite to the CHBA Net Zero Builder Training. Once training has been successfully completed renovators can request the Net Zero/Ready Home logos from their Service Organization (SO) for promotion of projects. (Renovator companies must have at least one Net Zero trained person on staff.)

4) Labels. Work with a CHBA Qualified Net Zero Energy Advisor (EA) and Service Organization (SO) to obtain ERS and Net Zero/Ready labels for the home(s).

How do I become a Qualified Net Zero Energy Advisor?

1) CHBA Membership. Be a CHBA member in good standing. Learn more about the benefits of membership and contact a local HBA to join. (Effective as of January 1, 2022)

2) Training. Complete both the CHBA Net Zero Builder Training and the CHBA Net Zero Energy Advisor Training with a minimum written exam score of 75%. Complete and pass the Modelling Exercise test file and Practical Exam test file within the Net Zero EA Training Course. An SO approved* Building Science Training course is a pre-requisite to the CHBA Net Zero Builder Training.

3) EnerGuide. Be registered through NRCan to deliver the EnerGuide Rating System (ERS), and ENERGY STAR for New Homes or R-2000.

4) Registration. The SO verifies that all Program Requirements have been met and then prompts the EA to register with the CHBA by signing the EA Agreement and Attestation at www.chba.ca/NZHLPregistration and paying the Energy Advisor registration fee. (Must have a CHBA account to login. If EA is not a member contact CHBA.)

- Once registration is complete, the SO sends the EA a confirmation letter along with the program marketing collateral. The EA will then be added to the CHBA Qualified NZ Energy Advisor directory at www.chba.ca/nze.

Note: If you took the Net Zero Energy Advisor Course prior to December 1, 2020 you must qualify under the version 1 process, which includes completing two mentorship files, mentored and reviewed by a CHBA Qualified Net Zero Energy Advisor.

How do I become a Qualified Net Zero Trainer?

1) Pre-requisite. Be a CHBA Qualified Net Zero Energy Advisor.

2) Approval. Be approved by your Qualified Net Zero Service Organization (SO) to deliver the training.

3) Experience. Must have successfully completed an adult learning instructional skills/train-the-trainer course and have experience delivering technical training.

4) Mentoring. Must receive mentoring at their first session from a CHBA Qualified Net Zero Trainer.

5) Registration. The SO verifies that all Program Requirements have been met and then prompts the Trainer to register with the CHBA by signing the Trainer Agreement and Attestation at www.chba.ca/NZHLPregistration and paying the Trainer registration fee.

- Once registration is complete, the SO sends the Trainer a confirmation letter along with the program marketing collateral. The Trainer will then be added to the CHBA Qualified NZ Trainer directory at www.chba.ca/nze.

How do I become a Qualified Net Zero Service Organization?

1) CHBA Membership. Be a CHBA member in good standing. Learn more about the benefits of membership and contact a local HBA to join. (When you join a local HBA, provincial and national membership is included.)

2) EnerGuide. Be a licensed Service Organization through NRCan to deliver the EnerGuide Rating System (ERS), and ENERGY STAR for New Homes or R-2000.

3) Energy Advisor. Must employ/contract at least one CHBA Qualified Net Zero Energy Advisor (EA) and ensure they meet all Program requirements.

4) Training. If SO chooses to deliver CHBA Net Zero Training, they must employ/contract a CHBA Qualified Net Zero Trainer for the course being delivered.

5) Registration. The CHBA verifies that all Program Requirements have been met and then prompts the SO to register with the CHBA by signing the SO Agreement and Attestation at www.chba.ca/NZHLPregistration and paying the Service Organization registration fee.

- Once registration is complete, the CHBA sends the SO a confirmation letter along with the program marketing collateral. The SO will then be added to the CHBA Qualified NZ Service Organization directory at www.chba.ca/nze.

Note: Service Organizations that meet the eligibility criteria must complete an SO application before registering. Applications can be downloaded here and should be submitted via email to brett.cass@chba.ca for review. Applications will be reviewed and applicants will be notified of their standing within 3 weeks.

To maintain this designation, participation in on-going CHBA Net Zero education is required (at minimum, at the time of program change), and at least one Net Zero or Net Zero Ready Home must be labelled every 3 years. All CHBA Qualified Net Zero Participants must register with the CHBA annually and pay their corresponding program fees.

Builders/renovators are responsible for complying with the Builder/Renovator Agreement and meeting all program requirements. They build/renovate the homes and are responsible for ensuring that their homes meet the Program Technical Requirements. They must provide attestation to CHBA that all program requirements have been met.

* Eligible pre-requisite Building Science courses must be delivered based on the concepts within the CHBA Builders' Manual and have an exam to confirm the students understanding of the course learning objectives. It is up to the discretion of the CHBA Qualified Net Zero Service Organization to determine if the pre-requisite is met upon a students registration in the Net Zero Builder Training course.

Register to become a CHBA Qualified Net Zero Participant

Please do not register as a Qualified Net Zero Participant until your Service Organization has confirmed your eligibility and prompted you to register. The registration serves as your Participant Agreement and Attestation and is to be signed annually.
