Welcome to Sunset Dunes, A Perfect PEI Modular Home

Modular home construction is an efficient and environmentally sensitive way to build a home today. With shorter build times, fewer wasted materials, and exemplary safety measures for workers, the construction method is rising in popularity.

Dubbed Sunset Dunes, this residence we’re about to showcase is just one example of an innovative modular home. Located in PEI and built by Supreme Homes (Tracadie-Sheila, New Brunswick) and Premier Island Homes (Charlottetown, PEI) its features, design and innovation earned it a national award for Modular Innovation in the 2020 CHBA National Awards for Housing Excellence, sponsored by Avid Ratings Canada.

Installed in the dead of winter, the amazing abode was a welcome challenge for Supreme Homes and Premier Island Homes. With howling winds whipping off the water and snowfall every few days, the builders still managed to finish the home on time, on budget and with the custom features the homeowners wanted.

Below are some of the modular home’s greatest features (it’s hard to choose just a few!).

All-Season Comfort

Sunset Dunes’ large triple glazed JELD-WEN casement windows feature a contemporary grill pattern and help reduce heat loss by almost 50 per cent (a welcome quality during frigid winters). The character of the stone and shake style exterior offers a warm welcome when walking up to the house, and a dormer with window (allowing plenty of natural light into the home) enhances curb appeal even further.

Inside the home, convection heaters with a ductless heat pump were installed and offer the ultimate in comfortable heating while helping the homeowners save money. Passive solar from the low-E argon windows also helps heat the home in the cooler months. Low-E argon windows are coated with a clear film that allows the sun’s light and heat to enter the home while minimizing the amount of heat that escapes the home. In the summer, these windows limit the amount of heat that can enter the house, whether from the sun, hot pavement, reflection of a vehicle, etc.

Customizable Construction

Sunset Dunes is a completely customized modular home. Upgrades include shiplap accent walls in several living spaces, thermal wood beams, a propane fireplace, built-in sound system, wine room and mini bar. The kitchen is a stunner! It’s great for entertaining guests with its open concept and seating at the island, and natural light pouring in from patio doors. It’s also extremely functional for day-to-day living:  the design includes a strategic work triangle so that the homeowners can move easily from the fridge to the sink and stove, and a large walk-in pantry and ceiling-height cabinets provide plenty of storage.

A combination of 14-foot-high cathedral ceilings and the large JELD-WEN windows means the home feels light, airy and open. The home’s three bedrooms are spacious yet separate from the living area. The main bedroom is a little further from the second and third bedrooms for some added privacy and features a large walk-in closet and ensuite with modern U-tile shower.
