GST Rebate for First-Time Home Buyers finally passes through House of Commons

December 11, 2025 – OTTAWA, ON – The federal government House Leader announced this afternoon that Bill C-4, which contains the GST Rebate for First-Time Home Buyers, has passed through all stages of the House of Commons. The Bill will now move to the Senate for review, before the final stage of being sent to the Governor General for Royal Assent.

CHBA is hopeful that there will be no further delays and that the Senate will approve Bill C-4 by next week, while it is still sitting before the winter break. With quick Royal Assent, first-time home buyers would finally be able to take advantage of the new rebate.

CHBA continues to advocate for the expansion of GST relief to all buyers of new construction homes up to $1M and on a declining basis for homes up to $1.5M, and for renovations that add additional units of housing to existing homes. In the meantime, this first step will at least enable first-time buyers who have been waiting on the sidelines since the announcement last spring to purchase new homes.
